Many of my patients in Arizona live far away from my office and I have an increasing number of patients from out of state that seek out my services. It is often difficult to come to my office for these patients and technology has really come up with a great solution - Skype.
As long as I do not have to examine you, I am happy to meet you online for a visit. In fact, an established patient with, say, a sinus infection, rash or even a cough can often have a patient visit on line. The advantage of having a personal physician with whom you have or will have a long standing relationship is that with continuity we can use many methods to conveniently care for you.
I recently had an online visit with a patient. Her labs were emailed to her before we met on line. We discussed her Vitamin D deficiency; how I would like to fine tune her thyroid medication and what we would do together to increase the size of her LDL cholesterol particles. I answered all of her questions and after our encounter I emailed some information she requested, filled her new prescriptions electronically at a pharmacy just a mile from her home and reordered labs at a drawing station near her work place. She lives 35 miles from my office! While her insurance did not cover the 30 minute visit and she paid out of pocket for the visit, she had NO copay, did NOT pay for gas to and from my office, she had NO waiting time because she signed up for the visit BEFORE she saw me, online, the day before. Her husband sat in on the visit so I had a chance to meet him and I saw her 3 month old child who is adorable! It was a real FAMILY visit.
One last thing about these visits, we can do them in the evening or early morning and on weekends! I think that this is pretty cool and goes a long way for engineering more convenience and great care for my patients when they just can’t come in to the office.
